Beacon Dance Touring & Residency Program

Beacon Dance is a professional performance organization presenting classes, workshops and performances to the general public.  Our work is a series of projects linked to the basic elements of dance:  The body, time, space and energy.  We design our projects to be interactive experiences with our audiences, to reflect the realities of our time, to occur in unusual spaces and with passionate attention.  The programs of Beacon Dance are offered throughout the year.  We are based in Decatur, GA, and tour extensively throughout the Southeast.

Performances

Beacon Dance is primarily a performance-focused organization.  The exciting and innovative performances we can bring to your community fall into two main categories, Current Projects and Recent Projects.

Current Project (July, 2006-present)

1906/2006

Beacon Dance seeks to further civic dialogue within the Atlanta metro area around the subjects of oppression and truth-telling, through the act of creating and performing art.  Oppression continues to be an ongoing issue facing the Atlanta metro community.  Over the course of nine months, Beacon Dance will develop a new evening-length movement-based performance piece entitled 1906/2006.  Through a lengthy period of research, creation, development and performance, 1906/2006 will contrast the events leading up to the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot with more current events surrounding the conflict in Iraq.  Our project will culminate with an evening-length dance work presented at the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, on the Emory University Campus.

Recent Projects include:

The Mapping Project: You are Here!

This multi-year Project  investigated the many ways that maps affect our lives, and how we form the maps of our communities.  In it’s final year, The Mapping Project brought site-specific performances to twelve parks and nature centers throughout DeKalb County, Georgia.  Each performance was video taped and later edited into a twelve-minute dance for the camera.  All twelve video pieces are intended to be screened simultaneously in a gallery-like setting as an installation performance.

The Elemental Project

This four-year project took inspiration from the four elements of water, earth, fire and air, with the focusing of our creative attentions on a specific element in each of the four years.

  • Year I:  Water Study - Performance piece interacting with water and investigating the concepts of birth and development
  • Year II:  Earth 1999 - Performance piece interacting with earth-based installation and investigating the concepts of control and manipulation
  • Year III:  Into the Inferno - Performance piece interacting with fire and investigating the concept of transformation
  • Year IV:  To Air is Human - Performance piece interacting with air and investigating the concept of freedom

From Site to Screen

In this project, commissioned by the Arts Festival of Atlanta in it’s final year at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, GA, the artists of Beacon created a new performance piece incorporating site-specific dance, video-taping of the dance and editing of the videotape into an art installation dance-for-video piece.

Fee Structure-Performances:

Low-tech school or community performance (approximately 45 minutes) - $500
Audience size is limited to 400 audience members.

Evening length (approximately 90 minutes)-$1000-$3500
Fully produced professional performance, no audience limit.

Residencies

The ideal way to experience the creative talents of Beacon Dance involves both class/workshop and performance activities.  By combining classes/workshops and performances in a day, week or two week artist residency, we can offer a truly fulfilling opportunity for your community!  We can tailor your residency activities to your unique needs, and we are more than happy to reach creative solutions to any obstacles that may arise.

What would a Residency Project mean for your organization and community?

Based on experience gained in recent residencies undertaken by Beacon Dance, we can provide  comprehensive residency planning and implementation to your geographic area.  We will:

  • Identify and approach organizations in your community to participate as partners (including spiritually affiliated organizations, organizations committed to social justice, environmental-based organizations and the artist community)
  • Assess the needs of, and develop relationships with, these community organizations, social service agencies and community groups
  • Plan for the long-term impact of  the project in your community (identifying the local particular issues of pertinence to this project)
  • Provide additional administrative support (direct-mail flyer design and printing, press release generation, photo and video documentation)
