Beacon Dance presents the Fourth Installment in Year-long Elemental Project

From 1998-2003, Beacon Dance embarked upon a multi-year investigation of the four primal elements as put forth by the ancient Greek philosophers: Water, Earth, Fire and Air. The artists addressed one element at a time over the course of the project, and spent at least a year on each one. The resulting performance pieces that the artists created were presented as site-specific works: in the 5 acre basement of the old City Hall East, the City Gallery East on the first floor of the same building, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, and the B Complex, respectively. After much consideration (and prodding), Beacon has ventured to re-address The Elemental Project, but this time as a one-year project, with all four Elemental performances taking place over the course of one season.

Beacon Dance will return to the site of the original performance of this fourth installment with The Elemental Project, 2011-12: To Air is Human…, on May 4 and 5, 2012. The performances will be held in the main gallery space of The B Complex, 1272 Murphy Avenue, Atlanta, GA, at 8:30 PM each evening, and are free and open to the public.

To Air is Human… draws inspiration from the responses the artists have been getting when posing the question, “What do you think happens to you when you die?” Some of these responses will be recorded, edited and manipulated into the sound score by composer/musician Jon Ciliberto. “Since no one truly knows for sure what happens after we die, we are finding inspiration in the ways in which people paint their ideas through their responses to this rather abrupt question,” elaborates project director D. Patton White. “With this final Element of this series, we decided that returning to the original performance space was a natural fit, as The B Complex main gallery space is an interesting ‘remain’, if you will, of some entity that has ‘passed away’—whatever this space was originally designed for in the world of commerce,” continues White.

In the intervening years, Beacon has become a Cooperative Member of The B Complex, an artists’ cooperative formed over 12 years ago to address the need for affordable studio space primarily for visual artists. “We had the fortune of having a very generous patron who initially made us aware of The B Complex many years ago, and since that time he was able to arrange for the contribution of our space to Beacon. So we not only have a great space to rehearse in, but we have an asset that will help with the long-term sustainability of Beacon,” said White.

Featuring a cast of 6 performers, To Air is Human… welcomes the audience into a cavernous industrial space offset with fluttering white fabric. As in the previous performances of this year-long project, the audience will be free to move about the space in order to experience the performance from a variety of perspectives.

The entrance to the B Complex is at 1272 Murphy Avenue, in the Oakland City neighborhood of Atlanta. The performance will last approximately 45 minutes, and will begin promptly at 8:30 PM each evening.
